World Rat Day
World Rat Day is observed on April 4 to give a moment to the little creatures that are often misunderstood and judged unfairly.
On this day, we honor these social, intelligent, and affectionate animals and urge people to see them in a brand-new light.
World Rat Day was established in 2002 by Ratlist members, which is an online community that appreciates rats and views them as friendly companions and necessary contributions to scientific research.
Rats are also a significant part of our ecosystem, and this day aims to break myths, improve care, and bring rat lovers across the world together.
The Longstanding History of Rats
Rats belong to the species called Rattus, which first appeared between 3.5 and 6 million years ago in Asia.
The black rat, scientifically known as Rattus rattus, and the brown rat, or Rattus norvegicus, are the two most common types found today.
It is believed that these two species diverged approximately 2 million years ago, with the black rat originating from the Indo-Malayan region and the brown rat from northern China and Mongolia.
If we trace their origins further back, rats belong to an ancient group of animals known as rodents.
Around 54 to 60 million years ago, the early ancestors of rats were comparatively small and resembled mice.
Slowly, these creatures evolved into the Muridae family that has mice, modern rats, and similar mammals. The reason that rats are one of the oldest living mammals is because they have a strong survival instinct and can easily adapt to different environments.
Rats and humans have shared spaces for many thousands of years, and this is what they call a "commensalism" relationship.
It means that even though they stay near people and benefit from them, they do not always harm them directly.
This behavior apparently started during the Neolithic period when farming and storing food became a regular practice, thus helping the rat species to thrive.
Rats traveled across the world as human traveling and trading increased, and with time, different cultures formed different perspectives about rats.
Rats started playing a significant role in contributing to science and research in the late 19th century as organizations like the Wistar Institute bred rats, especially for lab research.
These lab rats are still prevalent and used to study human health, medicine, genetics, and more.
However, rats are also known for their role in one of history’s most horrifying pandemics, which is the spread of the Black Death in the 14th century. It spread as they carried fleas that transmitted the bubonic plague, leading to widespread fear and the vilification of rats throughout the Middle Ages.
Observe World Rat Day
You can observe World Rat Day in many simple yet meaningful ways, such as raising awareness and appreciating these tiny creatures.
Use this day as an opportunity to pamper pet rats or get one for yourself, spend extra time with them, or buy them a new toy or treats.
Read up more on rats or watch documentaries and share more about rats on social media.
Supporting rat welfare is another important way to observe the day, whether by helping rescue organizations, promoting adoption, or spreading awareness about responsible pet ownership.
Online communities often come alive with photos, stories, and virtual events, allowing rat enthusiasts from around the world to connect and celebrate together.
Ultimately, the day serves as a reminder to look beyond common misconceptions and appreciate the important role rats play in ecosystems, research, and cultural traditions, encouraging a more respectful and compassionate perspective toward them.
