Every year on February 11, music lovers and guitar enthusiasts around the world celebrate National Guitar Day.

This is a day dedicated to one of the most influential musical instruments in history: the guitar. Even if you're not one of the two, you can still celebrate this day full-flegedly.

The History of Guitar and Its Evolution

The origins of the guitar go back over 4,000 years. Early stringed instruments appeared in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Persia, where people played lute-like instruments made from wood, animal gut strings, and carved bodies. These instruments weren’t guitars yet, but they carried the same core idea: strings stretched over a resonating body to create music.

A major ancestor of the guitar was the oud, developed in the Middle East. When the Moors brought the oud to Spain around the 8th century, it deeply influenced European instrument-making. In Spain, the oud gradually evolved into instruments such as the vihuela and the guitarra latina, both popular between the 14th and 16th centuries.

By the 16th century, Spain gave guitars a clearer identity. Early guitars usually had four or five courses (pairs of strings) and were smaller than modern ones. Over time, musicians preferred single strings instead of paired courses, and by the late 18th century, the guitar settled into the familiar six-string format.

The modern classical guitar took shape in the 19th century, largely thanks to Spanish luthier Antonio de Torres. He increased the body size, refined the internal bracing, and established the proportions that define acoustic guitars today. His designs dramatically improved volume, tone, and balance.

Why Guitars Deserve a Dedicated Day

Did You Know These Interesting Facts about Guitar

  • The word 'guitar' is derived from ancient terms like Greek kithara and Latin cithara, pointing to stringed instruments used in Mediterranean music long before the modern guitar existed.
  • The modern guitar’s shape is a Spanish invention. The familiar hourglass body of today’s acoustic guitar was standardized in the 19th century by Antonio de Torres Jurado, whose design is still copied by guitar makers worldwide.
  • Jimi Hendrix restrung right-handed guitars upside down. As a left-handed player, Hendrix flipped standard guitars and reversed the string order, which contributed to his unique tone and playing style.
